MY CURRENT FAVORITE SKETCHUP PLUGINS AND EXTENSIONSĭisclaimers: all opinions are my own, sponsors are acknowledged. In my day to day job, I’ve used this extension when I’m getting quantities out of a SketchUp model when I have to break out different areas, like the retail first floor of a high rise building.

Whenever you use this function, any geometry rendered not visible by your section plane is deleted. Download the file to your computer Open SketchUp and go to Menu Preferences. This extension also contains the ability to slice a model at a section plane. The best way to use this extension precisely is to turn perspective mode off and cut from one of the default views (front, back, top, bottom, etc). In addition to being able to slice raw geometry, you can also hold the Control Key to cut through nested groups and components. Any geometry visible between your two points that isn’t in a group will be cut. However, Zorro2 is still useful for slicing your models.Īt its basest functionality, you can simple click two points, and Zorro 2 will slice your object along the line you’ve drawn, allowing you to slice straight through your model. However, a lot of rendering programs have added the functionality for rendering section cuts, so this function isn’t used for that as much as it once was.

It was originally designed so that you could cut open your models and render them as section cuts. If your are SketchUp 2014 or SketchUp 2015, 32 bit, and you want to use Section Tool, you will need to download and install from the free plugin page. It opens a dialog and you can then set options - the cuts face colour, the section-cuts colour+width, the cuts layer, if its un-faced edges are kept and if all its edges are finally hidden etc. Zorro2 is an extension specifically designed for slicing your entire models into pieces. SectionCutFace adds a right-click context-menu item Add Section-Cut Face that becomes available if you have selected one (active) section-plane. I’ve also linked to it in the notes down below. Where can you get it? You can download it from the SketchUcation or SketchUp Extension stores. I’ve tried cleaning up the model to see if it was due to fussy geometry (it does take longer to generate the groups on the problematic sections), but that didn’t resolve the issue. I will right click on the section cut, and it is not there, not listed. I’ve downloaded it from the extension warehouse, I’ve found it on my computer, it blips, but I can’t find it in my sketchup file. All in all, the plug in is saving me time and I love it, but I’m stumped as to why it doesn’t work 100% of the time. Greetings Community,I’m finally getting around to wanting to use the section cut face extension but I’m having a problem opening the file. I have figured out a work around for the few times when it doesn’t work though by using the plugin SuperSection which automatically creates a scene and layer based on a section plane for which I manually name (same as the scut name of the section cut) and place the sectioncutface group on the newly created layer. After further exploration, I should correct my earlier stats, in that it does work correctly about 7 or of 10 times. I’m not in a particular scene when I implement the action, rather a zoomed out and orbited version of one so I can navigate to the section plane (for which I right click on). This has occurred when I “add sectionCutface” from a new section plane or from an existing one using the right click option. The group ends up on layer 0 even though it’s specified to be on a scutXXXX layer.
